Grabbing the Oyster!

One of the most important and valuable supports for anyone starting a business is other people who have been there and done that. This book by business strategist Pearce Flannery is full of insights from some of Ireland's most successful business people.

Pearce Flannery, business strategist and founder of Pragmatica, opens Grabbing the Oyster! with a question: do all successful entrepreneurs have some special gift? He attempts to discover the answer through a series of profiles of some of Ireland's most successful and high-profile business people, gleaning their words of wisdom along the way.

We hear from Denis Desmond of MCD, Pat McDonagh of Supermacs fame, Senator Feargal Quinn and sporting hero Niall Quinn. The interviews were conducted before the current downturn, but they are still relevant, particularly Louis Copeland’s observation that what drives him most is “ the fear of insecurity and the memory of difficult times when it seemed as though things were falling on top of me”. Perhaps we should learn to see the economic crisis as a great motivator!

Flannery answers his original question in the second half of the book, entitled ‘You can do it, too!’. He believes there’s no such thing as a born entrepreneur; that all business success comes from hard work and developing certain skills, which he then goes on to outline in the final chapters. This is a useful book with plenty of sound advice for the budding businessperson, particularly those with an interest in how people tick and the psychological aspects of developing your business skills.
