Start-up numbers on the rise in Northern Ireland

11.02.2010
The climate for start-ups in Northern Ireland appears to be improving, as statistics released by ICC Formations show the number of companies formed in 2009 went up by 3pc, with the second half of the year showing consistent increases compared to the same period in 2008.

Antrim is the most popular county for company formations, as it's where 48pc of new companies formed are based, followed by Down with 22.4pc and Tyrone with 10.8pc.

‘’The number of new companies being incorporated is an important measure of economic performance, both current and future, and so these figures can be seen as exceptionally encouraging which is a very positive development,’’ said head of professional services at ICC Formations, Jon Rock.

‘’After a shaky start, 2009 finished well with two consecutive quarters of positive growth in the number of companies being formed in comparison to 2008. In addition to this, the signs of recovery spotted in July have continued with consistent increases every month since.’’

The total number of new companies incorporated in Northern Ireland in Q4 2009 increasing by 30pc compared to the same period in 2008.

‘’2009 has been a difficult year for company formations however; Quarter 4 has brought some exceptionally positive signs so hopefully this positive trend will continue throughout 2010,’’ he concluded.
