New food start-up Kooky Dough gains TV profile

08.02.2010
The TV3 programme ‘Business Matters’ fronted by Ivan Yates yesterday highlighted a very new start-up company, Kooky Dough, as part of a review of the general SME landscape.

Kooky Dough only came to being last August as a result of Sophie Morris and Graham Clarke’s desire to create a high-quality product using natural Irish ingredients. The pair has come up with a range of ready-made dough mix, designed to be rolled out and cooked at home for that real home baked taste.

“To be honest the recession spurred us on to set up the business. We had been in financial services and were very aware of the importance of cost control. I think the recession led to us operating more efficiently,” said Morris on the programme.

“We started out at farmers’ markets, which were valuable in terms of customer feedback. Our biggest challenge will be to make the transition from that to retail. Dublin City Enterprise Board has been helpful in giving us some direction and contacts. As this is such a new product our main focus for the immediate future is to get it accepted by more and more retailers and make it recognisable for people.”

Kooky Dough uses a veritable list of native products such as Kerrygold butter, Brown and Caster Sugar from Siucra, Ballyfree Free Range Eggs and Odlums flour. Flavours include chocolate chip, mint chocolate, orange chocolate, white chocolate and cranberry, triple chocolate (white, dark and milk) and chocolate chip and hazelnut. All you have to do at home is slice the dough, pop onto a baking tray, and bake for eight minutes. Each roll makes 15 cookies.
