What areas does the finance function cover?

The basic areas that I believe need to be covered by the finance function are:

  • Raising capital and funding, initially and on an ongoing basis in order to support the business operations
  • Advising which projects are best suited to maximise the available business resources, taking into account the potential returns and the risks involved
  • Managing the ongoing cashflow requirements of the business and determining the working capital needs, whilst operating in the best interests of the shareholders
  • Ensuring that the business is operated in an ethical manner and that all statutory reporting requirements are adhered to, and that the business and shareholders are protected in this regard.
