My uncle in South Africa owns a travel agency and does personal tours with overseas tourists. He asked me to be an agent for him. I need some advice on how to start -- do I need to register a business?

You can just start. There is no rule to say you have to be a company or register a name. However if you set up a business you must keep records, do tax returns and if a liability to tax arises to pay it when it falls due. You would also be best advised to register a trade name if you plan to use one otherwise someone else could use your name.
