Advice from our onboard experts in all areas of business
I need to set up a website, would you recommend a DIY job or should I use the professionals?
You’re right, having a presence on the web is important for all of us today – even if you’re not planning to actively sell online.
I don’t typically recommend that you build your own website, and if your budget permits I would suggest that you work with a web developer who can help you build a professional presence online. They have great experience and expertise in this area and unless you want to learn those skills, hiring a professional is a sound investment as your website is a core element of an effective marketing plan.
If you do have a limited budget, there are some inexpensive tools available to build your own website.
However, when marketing online, it is not just about having a website, but knowing how to make the most of your presence online to help you raise your visibility in the search engines when people are looking for products or services that you offer and also how to convert the traffic visiting your website to people actually becoming customers.
Therefore, if you do decide to build your own website I suggest that you invest in learning about online marketing for your business – many of the County and City Enterprise Boards offer training programmes in this area.
The Irish Internet Association is also a great source of advice and training.
One free tool that could help you build a presence online immediately and at no cost is the service provided by Google – the Google Local Business Centre.
Using this service you can get a free listing on Google, detail your services or products, opening times, post photos of your products, add your location and even create discount coupons. It is definitely worth investigating and could prove a great interim solution for you while you are in the process of developing your website either by yourself or in liaison with a web designer.
