In setting up my accounting system, how can I find the best one to suit my business type?

The choice of your accounting system depends on many criteria, such as:

Business type and size
The cost of the application
The type of computer that it will be run on (assuming computer usage)
Ease of use
Who the users will be
Analysis tools and available reports
Level of detail required
Multi-currency?

Keep it simple

But my No. 1 rule of thumb is keep it simple and don’t rush into purchasing a system as at commencement, very basic books of account may well suffice. When the business has developed to a reasonable degree, a proper decision in conjunction with your accountant based upon the above criteria can be made.
