Business is so complex now that none of us can be expected to know everything there is to know.

Heretofore, the ‘boss’ was expected to know it all, that’s why he was in charge. Nowadays, access to knowledge is all around us and it is to be expected that there will always be people who know more than we do about something. So don’t worry , the questions from the investors are not a ‘pub quiz’, its more important how you deal with them.

Here are a few tips:

  • If an opinion-type question comes up, then give it a go. Put context around your reply; this will nearly always ensure that at least you are right in what you say for that context.
  • If it’s a factual-type questions then don’t be afraid to say you don’t have the information to hand and that you will get back to them within 24 hours.

Never underestimate what you do know. Chances are if you are in business for yourself you have built up a lot of experience that is not available to the investors. Show off that experience, it will impress them. Apart from the numbers (their expertise), your competence is what they need assurance of. Don’t hide it from them by avoiding questions.
